Nature-Based Health Promotion and the Environment

This working group aims to develop an interprofessional and cross-sectoral understanding of how nature-based approaches can be effectively embedded within health promotion settings across Nordic regions. Across Nordic welfare systems, there is growing recognition of the value of nature-based approaches in promoting health, wellbeing, and sustainable care delivery. These approaches – ranging from nature-based interventions and therapeutic landscapes to community-based outdoor activities – align closely with Nordic traditions of outdoor life and public health. However, despite increasing interest, their integration into formal health promotion and care systems remains fragmented, often limited to pilot projects or peripheral initiatives. At the same time, health and social care systems are facing mounting pressures, including rising mental health challenges, long-term sickness absence, workforce shortages, and persistent inequities in rural areas. This creates a timely opportunity to explore how nature-based approaches can move from marginal practices to embedded components of health promotion, particularly at the interfaces of occupational health, care systems, and rural community development.
