The settings approach in health promotion is well known and has been developing within a World Health Organization (WHO) context for more about 40 years. WHO defines settings as “the place or social context in which people engage in daily activities in which environmental, organizational and personal factors interact to affect health and well-being.”Examples of common settings being focused on in health promotion are neighbourhoods, cities, schools, and workplaces. Workplaces and people in work are included in more or less all settings, be it a city, neighbourhood or a school. The foundations of workplace health promotion is based on the Luxembourg Declaration.
The Settings and Workplace Health Promotion Group has in the past investigated whether and how workplace health promotion research in the Nordic countries focus on the workplace itself (that is, the setting) or whether the focus is more on lifestyle and individual factors. The last years the group has collaborated with the PhD Review of Nordic theses Research Group within the NHPRN and is currently conducting a study on what research methods and theories Nordic workplace health promotion PhD theses are making use of. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for developing new theories relevant for Nordic workplace health promotion.
